What Makes a Great Voice Reel?
If you’ve read any of the previous posts on our blog then you know that, here at Notable Voices, we love to talk about the importance of voice demo reels. And there’s a good reason for that, a solid demo reel is one of the most, if not the most, important tool in your arsenal for actually getting work as a voice over artist. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got the voice of an angel dipped in melted chocolate if you’ve got no way of showing that to people, no one’s going to be interested in working with you. In order to help you make sure that you’re always making the best impression when trying to find work, here are some of the things that make a really great voice reel, and particularly why you should come and record it here at Notable Voices!
One of the things that a lot of people who are new to the industry forget is just how much the way you record your voice can change the sound of it. After all, most voice over artists have wonderful voices but if you tried to record them on your laptop’s built-in microphone then all of the richness is going to disappear. You need to make sure that you’re recording into equipment that can really capture your voice as accurately as possible. At Notable Voices, you’ll be recording with industry standard equipment including a Neumann TLM 103. That way know that everything that comes out of your mouth is going to sound just as fantastic when it’s played back.
Material that shows what you can do
Of course, a nice voice recorded well is only going to get you so far. After all, it’s called voice acting for a reason. You need material in your voice reel that really shows your skills and range as a voice over artist. Luckily, as part of our Gold Package, Notable Voices works with you to write original scripts that will allow you to show the breadth of your abilities as a performer. Having a wide variety of styles to show off is not only going to show just how much skill you have, but it’ll show just how versatile, and therefore employable, you really are!
Then again, none of that is going to make any difference if you don’t have the voice to back it up. This means that you need to make sure that you’re taking care of your voice as much as possible. From resting it the night before recording to watching what you eat and drink to cutting things like cigarettes and alcohol entirely, there are plenty of things that you can do to get your voice ready to record your demo reel.
It might seem like the voice demo reel is just another step between you and actually being able to start getting work, but it really is one of the most essential steps. Every voice actor worth their salt needs to be able to show the world what they’re capable of and a high-quality voice reel recorded with us is the best way to do just that.
